From Myanmar to Pierce College—A Journey of Courage, Resilience, and Purpose

Pierce College's very own May Lu is this week's Chancellor's Student of the Week! After working hard at Pierce College for the past few years achieving academically, working at the bookstore and contributing to the success of women's soccer, May will be headed to her dream school of UCLA in fall 2025! Her journey began across the world in Myanmar and is one of perseverance and determination. Read all about her journey and successes.

Pierce College Named Top Five in Country as a Caring Campus

Los Angeles Pierce College has been officially recognized as a Certified Bronze-level Caring Campus by the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC). This honor was awarded to just five colleges nationwide in the inaugural certification cycle. Pierce is the only college in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and one of only three colleges in California to earn this distinction, highlighting the college’s strong commitment to building a culture of care that promotes student success.

History, African American Studies and Humanities Scholarship Open Now

Please share with students who may be eligible and interested! This scholarship is awarded annually to a Pierce College student who is transferring to a four-year college or university, majoring in any of the the disciplines of History, African American Studies or Humanities (HASH). The recipient must have completed at least twelve units in one of the above HASH disciplines, forty-eight units at Pierce College, and maintained an overall G.P.A. of 3.0. Scholarship Amount: $300

Celebrate Your Transfer Milestone at LAPC’s Transfer Celebration 

Students transferring to a four-year university in Fall 2025 are invited to the Transfer Celebration on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in The Great Hall at Los Angeles Pierce College. This event offers an opportunity to pick up your Transfer Cord and celebrate your achievements with fellow students and staff. To attend, please RSVP at bit.ly/TransferCelebration2025. 

Experience Japanese Karate: AAPI Heritage Month Demonstration 

Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a live Japanese karate demonstration on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Multicultural Center (LLC 5110) at Los Angeles Pierce College. Led by David Chung from Dragon and Crane Martial Arts, this event offers an opportunity to explore traditional martial arts and their cultural significance. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. 

ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS AND ASSISTANCE

Explore Your Transfer Options: Cal State LA at Pierce College 

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., representatives from California State University, Los Angeles will be available at the Career & Transfer Center at Los Angeles Pierce College. This event offers students an opportunity to learn about transfer pathways, discuss academic programs, and receive guidance on admissions requirements. Appointments can be scheduled in advance, but walk-ins are also welcome. 

Last-Minute Research Help: Online Workshop for Paper Success 

If you're racing against the clock to finish a research paper, join the “Help! My Research Paper Is Due” workshop on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. This online session will guide you through efficient strategies for locating credible sources, skimming for key information, and organizing your research to streamline writing and citations. Designed for students needing quick, practical tips, the workshop may also offer extra credit—check with your instructors for details. 

UCLA & CSUN Day: Connect with Your Future Campus 

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Los Angeles Pierce College will host UCLA & CSUN Day in The Great Hall. This event offers students the opportunity to engage with academic departments from both universities, explore transfer options, and ask admissions-related questions. Students already planning to transfer can meet their future academic advisors. Complimentary ice cream will be provided during the event.
